Common Wealth Games 2010

The frank admission by Olympic gold medallist Russell Mark comes just days after the latest warning about security and terrorist attack fears at the Games in October.

He has predicted that one more incident in India would result in the Games being cancelled or relocated.

When India bid for the Commonwealth Games in 2003, the budget to upgrade facilities in New Delhi was estimated at about Rs300 crore. Now, according to various estimates, that figure oscillates between Rs10,000 crore and Rs30,000 crore.

Dame Kelly Holmes, the President of Commonwealth Games England, has admitted that it has yet to secure sufficient funding to send a full team to the Delhi Games in October. Holmes, the 2004 double Olympic gold medallist, claimed that the squad’s holding camp prior to the Games was also under threat and that lack of support was more of a concern than the ongoing security threats.

The Commonwealth Games Federation on Thursday warned India again on the slow progress for Delhi 2010, saying "there remains much to be done" with just five months to go to the sporting extravaganza.

Even as top IOA officials expressed apprehension on Monday that attempts by the Union sports ministry to "control" sports bodies will see India being banned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), ministry officials said the government will fully respect the Olympic charter.

Delhi Police wants all major Delhi markets to be closed on the opening and closing days of the Commonwealth Games 2010. The opening ceremony of the 11-day sporting extravaganza will be held on October 3 and the closing ceremony will be held on October 14, both at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

The BBC has announced it has won the rights to show the 2010 Commonwealth Games from Delhi in October.

The Government of NCT of Delhi has informed that the Bombay Prevention of Begging Act, 1959 is in operation in Delhi since 1960. Drive against Beggary is a regular feature and action is taken against beggars as per provisions contained in the Act. They have appointed 13 anti begging squads to apprehend the beggars from different places of Delhi. 3 Courts (including 2 Mobile Courts) are working under the above said Act.
